Essay 5 - Waiting For Something To Turn Up.

They do not understand science, because they forget that scientific equations exist in the minds of scientists, and not as far as we know anywhere else; and although the human mind loves the process of induction, because it enables it to generalize and produce equations, (and science depends entirely on this process), unfortunately induction is only legitimate when common-sense says it is legitimate, and not otherwise. Nor do they understand religion, because it means saying you know the mind of the Almighty better than He does himself, which is not only arrogant, but idiotic as well.

Both these things I have done! I have shown science the respect due to it, and shown too the worthlessness of any objection. And what is more, I believe this is the only way to restore the vision of a world created by God, in our modern society today. At other times, and in other cultures, it may be possible to do it in other ways; but not in our country, now. This too I had the acumen to see. And no-one should be in any doubt as to what the consequences are. The Church of England is again on the map. Once again it is in business, if only its clergy have the wits to seize the opportunity. I only hope they have the sense to remain humble, and recognise their own insignificance in the absence of any ability to perform mighty acts of power. And even then, not be too conceited about it. After all, in the 320 years or so since the publication of Newton’s Principia, they have been utterly impotent to produce my synthesis or anything like it; and they would do well to remember this, in future.

As St. Thomas Aquinas recognised, creation is the best evidence of a Creator. As Carl Gustav Jung recognised, the best evidence that the Spirit of God lurks in the depths of the Psyche is that we have all got it. This inference, one is tempted to say, is infinitely preferable to the idea that we are all labouring under the same fantasy. So with Religion Rewritten, the best evidence that I have written sense, and that it is true, is that it leads straight to a vision of a world created by God, which anyone is free to accept, or not, as they please!

It is not good enough to hope that something will turn up. You must ask what has gone wrong, and why? And whether anything can be done to put it right? Those who are content to wait for something to turn up, are like sheep without a shepherd who will scatter to the four winds of folly, at the first whiff of danger. I would not wish to be of their company.
