disciples that the Spirit will be their advocate; that it will tell them what to say on every occasion, or tell them to say nothing. He does not tell them that the Spirit will come in baptism, or will save them from hell. Indeed on another occasion he made it clear that in his opinion the Spirit did not come through ritual; he said, “The wind blows where it wills; you hear the sound of it, but you do not know whence it comes, or where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit”. Finally he offers them peace; is it a coincidence that a moment later he says, “Up, let us go forward”? So, if the account is anything like accurate, never once did he base his teaching on abstract propositions; he based it on action, action, and again action. How right he was!
