the relationship must be preserved so that he can participate in the affairs of the world, then any inconsistent beliefs will have to be scrapped. It will only be possible to preserve inconsistent beliefs if the team relationship does not involve the whole personality. But if the team relationship is a function of the whole personality of each of its members, then all those beliefs of every member (Christian and atheist alike) which if put into practice would be inconsistent with the team relationship will have to be scrapped. The process is not instantaneous, but takes place over a period.

This is in fact no loss. It means that such beliefs as a man retains get put into practice. This is much more satisfactory than having many beliefs, very few of which get put into practice. In other words a vast amount of intellectual clutter, which was never any use, has been jettisoned piecemeal over the years. One is left with what has been proved useful. A team relationship with atheists is a salutary crucible of purification for the Christian, and is not something to be avoided. One's private life, one's home life, is a different matter.
