conscious mind, or it may be banished into the unconscious to fester all unrestrained. In a braver person, death may evoke a response, which may lead to belief in immortality in one form or another; for instance, the belief that love is stronger than death. But just as the concept of righteousness only emerged when the concept of love was discussed in Part I, and righteousness was irrelevant so long as confidence and lack of confidence alone were being discussed; so here, without the concept of evil, personality is largely irrelevant, and was only recognised in Part I as a static thing. If static, it cannot emerge, grow, or mature. So long as death, or the fear of death, is what one is concerned with, a perfectly relaxed consciousness and the belief in immortality are enough to cope with the situation. Personality will not grow unless there is a purpose in its growth; and without the need to overcome evil this purpose is not very obvious. But with the need to overcome evil, personality is essential. Without the growth of personality, man is hopelessly doomed in the slavery of evil. Through personality, man can rise above, and conquer evil.
I know I will be met with the retort, “How then did God's personality develop before there was evil?”. The answer is, “I don't know”. I do not even know that there was a time before which evil did not exist, as the question presupposes. Why should time and evil have been born together? Space, time, and matter, yes. But why time and evil? What does seem clear, as there is evil here and now, is that the development of God's personality (if he exists) is bound up with the evolution of man's. It would be strange if God were separate from human evolution; because stepping into the shoes of a creator for a moment, if man's evolution is tending to perfection (assuming we do not blow ourselves up in the meantime) when that perfection is reached, if God is separate from it, then the separation is complete and eternal. The result would presumably be torment; for both sides, when they became aware of the true…
