        In eternity one would hope to be free, free to be one's true self: free to help construct a world without sin. It would be a self-disciplined world, even ruthlessly self disciplined; but one would hope it would be free from mutual manipulation, or the taking advantage of one person by another. These are both aspects of sin. Anyone who wants to indulge in these activities, will either never get into eternity; or if they get in, they will on discovery promptly be kicked out. Where will they go afterwards? Well, nobody is interested.

        First however, one would need to become conscious of all one's weakness and inadequacies. The psalmist, who continually complains about the confidence and cocksureness of the ungodly, describes himself by saying, “I am a worm, and no man”, and, “All thy waves and storms are gone over me”. He is quite right. But the point of becoming aware of one's inadequacies in eternity is not to consider oneself a miserable sinner for ever; it is so that one by one they may be rooted out, or if you prefer it, filled in.

        Let there be no misunderstanding. This freedom in eternity cannot be freedom to do what you want. It is likely that the only freedom granted to you will be to help create a progressively increasing mutual trust, and almost…
