circumscribes his conduct which alone is capable of leading to verification of belief. If the conduct is circumscribed, the beliefs which can potentially be verified are circumscribed too. But since perfect team-work involves the whole personality, it promotes the growth of personality; and as the members grow in stature, so the team should evolve towards greater perfection. There is no reason to think therefore that perfect team-work limits indefinitely the beliefs a person can hold, provided that the beliefs are capable of being confirmed by experience.

        What happens to team-work when the whole personality ceases to be involved; for instance, either the team may be too loosely knit, or the personality of a member may have outgrown the team? If the whole personality is not involved, those parts which are not involved are left to atrophy by the relationship, because it has already been noticed as a general phenomenon of life that what is not used, both in the physical and mental or spiritual worlds, tends to atrophy and die. Hence the common experience in friendships based on gift-love and need-love that they bring out the best and the worst sides of people at the same time. In other words, insofar as his whole personality is not involved, the member of the team is free to calculate. He has a choice, either to help make a better community, and better team-work, or to indulge in personal egotism. It can be the egotism of glittering personal performance, or merely the egotism of indulging in a relationship based on gift-love and need-love. Expressing it in more general terms, the only environment in which confidence can grow, and the personality as a whole can grow, and where at the same time part of the personality is not atrophying, is one where the whole personality is involved. In other words in team-work: in other words in community life. Whatever the defects of any particular community, it is only community life that offers a framework within which to form relationships which involve the growth…
